Bangor v Academy 2003 Group Match Report 17/10/10
With a long tiring journey from Newtownabbey to Bangor due to traffic chaos and little time to warm up you would have expected the better prepared Bangor side to take early control in this game. But it was Academy that came out of the blocks first on this still and sunny autumnal day. Louis set down an early marker with a few barraging runs which were well supported by his team mates. Academy’s ability to keep the game alive with good ripping and offloads meant they could find space to score.
Defensively, when Bangor did have the ball we pressurised them really well leading to handling errors for the men in yellow and blue. Academy closed the space down well and made the tackles. Work needs to be done to make the tackles lower as some of Bangor’s stronger runners were allowed to make good ground while we were ‘hanging on’.
All in all Academy were the hungrier side with everyone keen to get their hands on the ball and although a number of the trys were individual efforts a lot of our chances came from great support running and being there to receive the offload.
In the closing minutes Academy stopped concentrating and let in a few trys out wide which proved that we have to keep our defensive heads switched on and make the tackles for the full duration of the match.
Things to work on next week:
1. staying on our feet at the ruck/tackle area
2. making our tackles lower
A great team effort Academy, well done to all the players including the try scorers, Louis, Luke, Tom, Finn & Noah (2).
Squad: Andrew, Ben, Sarah, Lewis, Matthew, Tom, Noah, Louis, Luke, Finn, Patrick & Scott
Final Score: Bangor 2 Academy 6
