Match Report: Academy v’s Omagh at Omagh on 19/09/09

Omagh 12 – Academy 28

Pre-season is well a truly over. "Qually" 2 started last week for other teams, we started today……and guess what? …..a bus trip!!  The great and the good, and Adrian, arrived spic and span at 1. One section of the coach load heading for the changing rooms and the other “athletes” headed in for refreshments and Omagh hospitality.

We started well, game plan on and had a clear advantage among the piano players. A missed pen on 3 mins was our first opportunity to score. 2 mins later we had the feed to a scrum on our 10m line, solid scrum, Robbie H fed the ball to the ladies who cut a swathe through the Omagh defence Norm raised through fed in to "Jedens", and on to Captain Kyle, Coop converted: 0 – 7.

We maintained our dominance, and on 15mins, Will Martin fielded a poor Omagh clearance, struck hard in counter attack, fed Kyle who set Norm free to go in under the posts, Coop converted: 0 - 14.

Omagh were chasing shadows as we made our superiority count, and on 19mins, we turned Omagh over on their 10m line, moved the ball under pressure from Omagh, and SteveO's give/take pass made the break for Normski to get free out wide to zip in , Coop on the money again: 0 -21. However, shortly afterward, the McCarthy hamstring appeared and SteveO limped off on 26mins. The good news was that Omagh weren’t able to use their 1 man advantage and on 33 mins we had the put in to a scrum on their 10m line, Gurt broke with the wheel, fed “Frank” to Will and on to NC coming off his wing to score again- Coop added the con: 0 – 28.

Half time: 0 – 28. The only issue in the first half was 14 men v’s a pretty effective rolling maul

From the off in second half our intensity was absent and Omagh got their rolling maul working, 45 mins, 5 – 28. We than had a golden opportunity, on 52 mins, to kill Omagh off with a great break from deep defence after a strike against the head, we launched “Jedens” on ½ way, only to be nudged into touch 2m out –…………….aaaaahh! On 58 mins another rolly polly effort finally broke through our defence: 12 – 28. On 63 mins Hendy saw yellow for somebody else’s misdemeanors at a maul – 13 men!! On 70mins Gurt came off with a cute addition to his good looks – 12 men!! Mal lookalike patched him up, and back on he went. 13 men. Despite this, plus some real hometown decisions, and odd decisions by us in defence, Omagh couldn’t use their advantage in possession and numbers and the result became inevitable: 12 – 28, and a big “W” and 2 points!!

Different proposition next week folks…….
